Alexander Grant House
Each year the
Salem County Historical Society hosts its Annual Dinner to raise funds for the Society.
I always know when I get the letter from the Society for the Silent Auction that I need something interesting and different. In the past we have donated many South Jersey Ware Chairs and Rockers to the
Silent Auction but this year we wanted to do something to spark some interest.
Collections at the Society
When doing a local house call we acquired an interesting shaving mug marked B. Archer Waddington. Shaving mugs were commonly used from 1870 to 1920 at home and at local barber shops.
Dr. B. Archer Shaving Mug
Many gentlemen went to the barber shop to get a daily shave during this era. Each man was required to have his own shaving mug, as it was thought having individual shaving mugs would reduce the rashes caused by shaving. We decided the Waddington mug would be a perfect donation. It is a very well known family name throughout Salem County.

The Waddington family once owned the building that now houses the Royal Port. They ran a grain and feed business. So who is B. Archer Waddington? He was a leading member of the medical profession in Salem County. He was born in Salem in 1841. He graduated from the University of PA in 1865. In his bio it notes that one of the marked qualities of the Doctor was in his kindness and genuine desire to help others in every possible manner. The shaving mug is in perfect condition. There is an additional biography with family details that is provided along with the mug. Good luck to the highest bidder. The Society's Dinner is Friday, September 21st at the Washington Club, Penns Grove. Mike and I will be there to support the Society's efforts in maintaining the County's History.
